James ArmstrongVice President, Land
James Armstrong has more than 15 years’ experience in the North American and international energy industry focusing on commercial negotiations, joint ventures, agreement drafting, and strategic acquisitions and divestitures. He is responsible for the commercial management of Heritage Royalty’s lands and is leading Heritage’s digital transformation leveraging AI and data analytics. Mr. Armstrong holds an MBA from Queen’s University, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce in Petroleum Land Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Calgary.
Mr. Armstrong’s background includes being the Senior Manager of Land and Joint Venture at Nexen Energy ULC from 2011 to 2017. After commencing with Nexen in 2004, he held roles of increasing responsibility, including a two-year overseas assignment in Yemen. Prior thereto he held positions in land at Canadian Superior Energy and Harvard Energy.
Since 2013 Mr. Armstrong has been instructing Cases in Petroleum Land Management at the Haskayne School of Business. In 2014 he taught an executive education course on Global Energy Policy to oil and gas professionals at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
